Decisions, Decisions

Despite the fact that we have been on previous exchanges to Australia, preparing oneself to leave for the “land down under” for a year remains a seemingly insurmountable task. We’ll never complete everything on the to-do list with only 2 weeks to lift off. Nevertheless, hopefully we’ll have kept bankers, financial planners, insurance companies, travel agents and many other organizations happy and well paid for the year, as well as leaving our home in good shape for our great exchange partners.

Outside of dealing with the above, we made two other extremely important decisions that took many evenings of deep thought, reflection, debate and discussion stretching the boundaries of marital bliss.

Firstly, what do we name our moose?  Bullwinkle was too cliché and then there was........but no, that name was simply unacceptable. The debate raged on, straining our relationship, until after a fortnight of debate it was mutually agreed that Alice Alces would be his name. Yes, yes, we know our new family member is a little bull moose with a distinctly feminine name.  If he were to live in the wild near the Eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains he,no doubt, would be teased a little by his moose friends.  But he’s going to live in a nice, warm house in Brisbane with palm trees in the backyard so Alice won’t care. Why the name Alice? Well, the genus and species of the North American moose is Alces alces so........................
The second issue was determining where to go or what to do until school starts in January, 2013. We researched options on the internet, read travel literature, visited travel agencies and spoke with our exchange partners but to no avail.  We could not decide what to do.  Our list of potential travel destinations remained too long for an inordinate amount of time. It was time to rely on our stomachs (our brains were terribly inefficient) so we are off on a campervan tour of Tasmania for a few weeks.

Now.......do we own suit cases?
